LAGOS — Economic leaders, environmental experts and institutional investors have gathered in Lagos for the launch of the African Forestry Trust Fund, a multi-billion-dollar catalytic finance initiative designed to unlock greater value from Africa's forests and carbon resources.
The initiative was inaugurated at the Lagos Leadership Roundtable chaired by former Nigerian Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
Discussions at the meeting focused on Africa's enormous forestry resources and the economic opportunities available through sustainable forest management, carbon markets and domestic timber processing.
Participants highlighted the financial losses associated with exporting unrefined timber while failing to fully capitalize on verified carbon credits.
The newly established trust fund is designed to attract international institutional investment into forestry-related projects across the continent.
Its objectives include restoring degraded forest landscapes, supporting sustainable timber processing hubs and strengthening the economic value of Africa's natural resources.
The initiative is particularly focused on opportunities across West and Central Africa, where forestry resources can potentially contribute to both environmental conservation and industrial development.
Prof. Osinbajo emphasized that Africa's tropical forests and ecosystems represent significant global natural capital.
The trust fund is intended to bridge the gap between environmental conservation, carbon markets and high-value domestic industrial production.
The initiative therefore places sustainable forestry at the intersection of climate finance, conservation and economic development.
