WEST AFRICA — The Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, is deepening its security cooperation while pursuing a new strategic approach that increasingly links defence partnerships with access to economic and natural resources.
The three military-led governments have continued to strengthen their collective security structures following their withdrawal from several traditional regional and multilateral arrangements.
The emerging model places counter-terrorism cooperation, military coordination and strategic economic partnerships at the centre of the bloc’s foreign policy.
Military officials within the alliance have pointed to tactical progress against insurgent groups operating across parts of the Sahel, where extremist violence and instability have remained major challenges.
Despite the reported security gains, regional analysts caution that military action alone may not provide a lasting solution to the region's problems. They say stronger investment in infrastructure, employment, food security, education and local economies will be essential to complement security operations.
The AES countries are therefore facing the challenge of balancing their growing military partnerships with economic policies capable of improving living conditions and addressing some of the underlying causes of instability.
The direction of the alliance could have significant consequences for the wider West African region as its members continue to reshape their political, economic and security relationships.
