KHARTOUM / GENEVA — Sudan's devastating conflict is facing renewed international scrutiny following allegations that the Sudanese Armed Forces developed and deployed chlorine-based chemical weapons against the Rapid Support Forces.
The allegations are based on more than 150 leaked intelligence documents, intercepted communications and testing operations. The material reportedly details a programme that allegedly began in 2024 and included plans involving chlorine-filled warheads.
The Sudanese military has strongly denied producing or deploying chemical weapons.
Despite the denial, the allegations are expected to increase international pressure for an independent investigation into the reported programme, including questions surrounding how the chlorine was obtained and who may have authorised its alleged use.
The development comes as Sudan's wider conflict continues to attract international concern. A United Nations fact-finding mission has reported that foreign weapons and logistical networks are helping to sustain the war.
According to the report, drone strikes alone killed more than 1,000 people during the first five months of 2026, highlighting the continuing scale and intensity of the conflict.
The latest allegations could further intensify calls for independent investigations and greater international attention to the humanitarian and security consequences of the Sudan war.
