KAMPALA — Uganda is preparing to enter the ranks of oil-exporting nations by the end of the year, marking a significant development in the country's energy sector.
The country has formally named its crude oil “Pearl Sweet,” with the energy secretary confirming that the majority of Uganda's crude will be transported through the newly constructed East African Crude Oil Pipeline.
The 1,443-kilometre pipeline will carry crude from landlocked Uganda toward the Tanzanian coast, providing the country with an important route to international markets.
The East African Crude Oil Pipeline, commonly known as EACOP, is now described in the report as the world's longest heated pipeline.
Uganda's expected transition into an oil-exporting country represents an important moment for its energy industry and could reshape the country's economic relationship with the regional and international petroleum market.
The development also places greater attention on the infrastructure required to transport crude from a landlocked country to the coast and onward to global markets.
