Kenya is strengthening its position within Africa's rapidly expanding green-technology sector as new initiatives seek to connect African innovation, investment and climate solutions.
The timbuktoo GreenTech Hub in Kenya, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is focused on supporting entrepreneurs and innovators developing solutions across renewable energy, energy storage, energy efficiency, waste management and other climate-related technologies.
The initiative forms part of the wider timbuktoo programme aimed at building stronger innovation ecosystems and unlocking investment for African startups.
Kenya has emerged as an important location for the initiative because of its established technology ecosystem and significant renewable-energy sector.
The development comes as African countries increasingly look towards locally developed technological solutions to address energy access, climate change, agriculture, transportation and waste-management challenges.
Green technology is also becoming an increasingly important economic sector, creating potential opportunities for startups, investors, engineers, researchers and young entrepreneurs.
For Kenya, strengthening its green-tech ecosystem could attract additional investment while providing African innovators with platforms to develop technologies capable of being deployed across the continent.
The wider ambition is to ensure Africa becomes not merely a consumer of global climate technologies but also a producer and exporter of innovative solutions developed for African conditions.
